History From America's Most Famous Valleys
Indian Castle
Grider sketched in 1886 the INDIAN CHAPEL that Sir William Johnson had sponsored. Located near a fortified Mohawk village, known as the Upper Castle, it is the only surviving structure connected with Indian communities in the Valley. Mary ("Molly") Brant, Sir William's housekeeper and the mistress of Johnson Hall, and her brother Joseph, who donated land for the chapel, resided at the Upper Castle.
