Palatine Families of New York by Henry Z. Jones Jr.

When Matthys (Brunk,Bronck,Bronk,Brong) came over from Germany by way of England, in 1709, he was in a group of people called Palatines. They were to work off their passage and Gov. Hunter of NY, sent his group to West Camp, along the Hudson.

St. Paul's Lutheran Church, West Camp, (Ulster,NY), records give this marriage record.

11.15.1710 Mattheus Brunk (wid. blacksmith, of Andel, earldom of Veldenz) mar. Anna, (wid. of Sebastian Wormser, of Bubach, commune Lichtenberg, county of Zweybruck).

They had a son, (same Church records) Niclaus b. 28 Feb, bapt. 4 March 1713.

On 21 Jan 1715 Matheus Brunck drowned.

On 15 Nov 1715 Joh. Planck's wife died.

On 29 May 1716 Johann Planck (wid, of Dausenach, commune Nastau), mar. Anna, (wid, of Mattheus Brunck, Newtown)

On 21 Oct 1716 Joh. Planck's wife died (Anna)

What happened to NICLAUS BRUNCK? (b 1713)

I'm sure he's my link to Mattheus, as the next generation that would follow Niclaus, I have Niclaus m. to Christina Schram and the first two sons are Matthys and Niclaus.

Another book is The Early Palatine Immigration by William Knittle. Much background and passenger lists, although I do not suspect they are complete.

Generation No. 3

3. NICHOLAS3 BRONK (MATTHEW (MATTHEUS) BRONK(2 BRUNCK), BRICIAS1 BRUNK)1 was born February 28, 1712/13. He married CATHERINE SCHRAM1 December 23, 1757 in Zion Lutheran Church, Loonenburg (now Athens, Greene County, NY1.

Notes for NICHOLAS BRONK:
[bronktree.FBK.FBK.FTW]
IAW Rev Lewis Stoughton concerning Nicholas
"There was a Nicholas in the Revolutionary War. Perhaps it was our Nicholas-possibly his son Nicholas- or he may have been of the Jonas Bronk family, though I find no record of a Nicholas of the Jonas family of right age and no other record of Nicholas, son of Matthew except his baptism. The Veterans Administration, Washington, DC writes that they have no pension record of any Nicholas BRonk. As above Nicholas was born 1713 he presumably died before pension law was passed."

Mr McConville, a branching Brunk, told me that the age of the Nicholas we had was problematic. As you say he would have been quite old to be fathering children later on. I don't think that at this point any of us are sure that the Nicholas most have in the Brunk line from Mathys (1710) is who we wish him to be. Possibly we have "lost" the Nicholas born to Mathys! When I fist corresponded with him he had a Johann Michael Brunk as the first of our line coming to US in the 3rd party of the Palatines in 1710. And that he had a son named Nicholas, born 28 Feb 1712. Later he was not sure of that connection, and we came up with Mathys. He said that differences in spellings were due to: 1. The predominance of the Dutch Bronks; clerks thought everyone
with a name sounding like THE Bronks must be a Bronk; 2. They wrote down names phonetically. He said that you could determine ethnicity to some extent by which church they attended. Germans-Lutheran/Dutch-Reformed.

began my research with the help of Howard McConville, of the Schenectady Historical Society. He was in fact a descendant of my Brunks. He helped lead me to see that there is a difference between Brunk and Bronk. The former being German and the latter being Dutch. There are various spellings, but Mathys, Nicholas, Jacob, etc. are Brunks and German, orginiating in a village called Andel, on the Moselle River in Germany. All the church records back to Andel are Brunk. I am descended from Jacob and Hester Hurst Brunk's son Henry, who moved to Iowa in the 1860's and then Nebraska; he left there for Washington state in 1903, dying in Toledo, WA in 1904. Please reply.

Notes for ELIZABETH A SECOR:
[bronktree.FBK.FBK.FTW]

Jacob A. Houck married (second) in Glenville, Elizabeth A. Secor. born in the town of Berne, Albany county, New York, 1840. She survives him and resides in Schenectady, having disposed of a part of the home farm. She is a member of the Dutch Reformed church. She is a daughter of Captain Francis and Catherine (Brunk) Secor. Captain Secor was born in Berne, Albany county, in 1818, died there at the age of forty-four years, a son of Colonel Cornelius and Mary (Shaver) Secor, both native-born residents of Albany county. Colonel Secor was a son of Daniel Secor, of France, emigrant ancestor and founder of the Albany county Secor family. He was reared a Catholic in religion, but on arriving at mature years became a convert to Protestantism. He was greatly persecuted for his change of faith, and his life was threatened. He resolved to come to the American colonies, and secretly made his preparations. His intentions became known, and he was forced to flee with nothing but the clothes he wore and his newfound treasure, "The Bible," which he strapped under his clothing, and slipping into the river, swam silently across unobserved. He settled first in New York state in the Black River country, later locating in Albany county, where he took up two hundred and forty acres of land, then in a wild state. He obtained a clear title to the land by purchase from the patroon, improved it and converted it into a fertile farm. His son, Colonel Cornelius Secor, married Mary Shaver, and had eight children. His son, Captain Francis Secor, married Catherine Brunk and had five children:

I am searching for the ancestors and origins of William WELLS born 1759, joined the Dutch Reformed Church of Mayfield in 1800 and lived the remainder of his life in that town. My best guess is that he came from Conn. near Hartford to Mayfield around 1790. The Gloversville museum has a map that shows landowners in that area circa 1840 and on it there is William living next door to Abraham WELLS on the Northwest side of town not far from Riceville. I do not know where he is buried. He married Catherine BRONK and had several children including my great-great-great grandfather Peter WELLS.
