John I. Empie, a son of the sainted John Empie, was one oF the first fruits of brother Weiting's labors in the Sharon charge; and was one of the pastor's most steadfast friends and safest counselors in all that pertained to the interest of the church. He was a brother of more than ordinary

intellectual capacity -- always true to his Christian professsion, and to the end of his days was an honor to the church and a blessing to the world. The Lord had entrusted him with many talents, and so faithfully did he improve them that he gained a long continued advancement in the Divine life. He was another one of those brethren that possessed a wonderful gift in prayer, in the exercise of which it was clearly seen and felt that he attended to it invariably every day of his life. Perhaps at no period in the history of the church was his wise counsel and active co-operation more needed than at the time of his death. But the Lord, in His inscrutable providence, removed him suddenly from the pains and toils of earth to his eternal rest in heaven; and while the church most keenly feels her loss, the consoling thought remains that their loss is his eternal gain. He died some three or four years ago, aged about seventy years." (Pages 172 and 173)

1335. f ii. Louisa Sophia EMPIE, born 10 Mar 1829 in Sharon, Schoharie Co., NY, USA, christened 5 Apr 1829 in Sharon, Schoharie Co., NY, USA.
BAPTISM: Recorded: St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Sharon, Schoharie Co., NY USA. Parents: "John J. Empie and wife, Lany". Sponsors: Parents.
Note: In most transcribed records, John Empie's middle initial is given as "J." rather than an "I." I think this is because in colonial writing the two letters looked very similar and transcribers usually guessed the wrong one. (BEG)
NOTE: This child is not listed in Census of 1850 for this family. Did she die young, or had she married by then and left home? In 1850 she would have been about 21 years of age. Marriage seems likely. (BEG)

He was the son of John "John of Sharon" EMPIE, Jr. and Sophia SHAFER. Gideon died 28 Apr 1910 in Sharon, Schoharie Co., NY, USA, and was buried 30 Apr 1910 in Sharon, Schoharie Co., NY, USA.

NOTES for Gideon:

BIRTH: Born on family's "Sharon Hill" farm, Jan 31, 1816, HISTORY OF SCHOHARIE COUNTY, William E. Roscoe, p xxii, T-Sharon, Schoharie Co., NY USA: Empie, Gideon, p.o. Sharon Hill, farmer, 375 acres, born on same farm January 31, 1816; wife, Susan Kilts, married Nov 24, 1840; children five - Sophia E., Myron O., Luther, Martha H., and John J. Father, John I. Empie.

MARRIAGE: Reformed Church, T-Sharon, Schoharie Co., NY USA.

OCCUPATION: His granddaughter, Susie Empie, daughter of John Jay Empie, says her grandfather was "a singing" schoolmaster.

CENSUS: 1855 NYS - Gideon Empie, and, wife Susan, appear on June 1855 Census, Sharon, Schoharie Co., NY: Gideon, age 39, Susan, age 32, Sophia, age 12, Myron O., age 11, Luther, age 7, Martha, age 3, John Jay age 1. Years lived in Sharon for Gideon, 39, for Susan, 32.

BIOGRAPHICAL: (From Barbara Empie Greene): The farm that Gideon and Susan owned had been passed down through the family by several deed transactions. It moved from "John Empea", of the Town of Sharon, Schoharie County to "John Empie Junior" of foresaid Town and County on June 24, 1807. (One hundred acres). On Feb. 20, 1815, another 30 acres was deeded to "John Empie Junior" by "Joh. Empie of Town of Sharon, County of Schoharie and State of New York, Farmer". These transactions are identified as being between Johannes Empie, who married Anna Maria Kilts, and his son, John Empie of Sharon, who married Sophia Shaver. On May 23 1856, the same land was deeded to Gideon Empie, son of John Empie of Sharon, who in turn deeded it to his son, Myron Orlo Empie on March 16, 1905.

The 1855 NYS Census shows that Gideon, Susan and their children were living at that time with John of Sharon and wife Sophia Shaver on that land, Lot #349. It is probably safe to assume that after the change of ownership in 1856, when John was 79 years old, John and Sophia continued to live with their son and daughter-in-law until they died. Gideon and Susan were 39 and 32 respectively at the time of the transfer. (Children: Sophia, age 12, Myron O., age 11, Luther, age 7, Martha, age 3, John Jay, age 1.) From HISTORY OF SCHOHARIE COUNTY, NEW YORK, 1713-1882, William E. Roscoe, p. xxii, Sharon: Empie, Gideon, p.o. Sharon Hill, farmer, 375 acres, born on same farm January 31, 1816; wife Susan Kilts, married November 24, 1840; children five - Sophia E., Myron O., L., Martha H., John J. Father, John I. Empie
