NOTES for George:

BIOGRAPHICAL: (From Ralph Kilts):

For reasons unknown at this time, George traveled westward about 1851/1852, reportedly to the States of Michigan and Wisconsin. He apparently returned to Clockville, NY for his family, but Catherine refused to go west with him. She kept the children and stayed in Clockville. George returned to his Michigan/Wisconsin destination. Harlan Kilts of Clockville, NY, reports that George traveled by train and boat to Wisconsin; was in two train wrecks, and had a "rough" boat ride before reaching his destination. (Harlan Kilts' memory of a letter he read.)

(Page 329)

George and Catherine must have had some sort of separation or divorce arrangement, for we find that Catherine remarried to a Jacob Mason, Sr., who brought two sons of his own into the marriage. Catherine and Jacob then proceded to have eight more children. George married Ann Rogers in 1853 and had five children in Wisconsin. Not a whole lot is known about George for the next several years. It is reported that a younger brother, Reuben, went west with him. Reuben is supposed to have settled around La Crosse, WI, but no verification of this has been found. George seems to have settled around Pipersville, WI, which is just to the southeast of Watertwon, WI. It is quite possible that they both spent some time in Michigan before going on to Wisconsin, but there is no evidence at this time for verification. The 1860 and 1870 US Census for La Crosse Co., WI, do not show any Kilts names.

BURIAL: Pipersville Cemetery, Pipersville, WI USA.

BIOGRAPHICAL: (Kevin R. Cashen) ...my great, great grandfather was George Kilts who with his wife Catherine, came to Ionia County, Michigan, some time in the late 1850's from New York. His sons at the time of the move were William H. and Nicholas. He later had a son, Richard, who was my great grandfather. Austin, Richard's son was my Mother's father, not her grandfather. I always knew William H. Kilts came to Michigan with his father as he could not have been older than twelve years at the time. However, I have never found further information on him in the Matherton area where the other Kilts lived. (In writing to Deborah White, a "suspected" Kilts cousin): I cannot guarantee anything, but I have a strong suspicion that your William is our long lost great, great uncle... Deborah (Kilts) White writes, 10/4/1995: My William Henry has been with his father, Nicholas, since 1 year so there are two William Henry's.
