(RWPA: #W19355)" (COMPENDIUM OF EARLY MOHAWK VALLEY

FAMILIES, Maryly B. Penrose)

DOCUMENTATION: "The Sgt. Henry was age 76 in 1833 when granted a pension for Revolutionary War service in the New York militia. Simms says Henry was wounded at the Battle of Cobleskil, NY, 29 May 1778, died 15 April 1839, at age 82, and had a brother-in-law, Peter Snyder, who erroneously reported Henry as deceased after both fled the Cobleskil battle (FNY v2/154)." (EARLY FAMILIES OF HERKIMER COUNTY, NEW YORK, William V.H. Barker, 1986)

DOCUMENTATION: From: HISTORY OF SCHOHARIE COUNTY, NY, SOME OF ITS PROMINENT MEN AND PIONEERS, by William E. Roscoe, 1882, Page 402-403: "Henry Shafer settled upon the farm now occupied by his grandson, George Shafer, some time before the Revolution, but not as early as the other Shafer families, and was the youngest brother of John Shafer. He became a prominent man in the County, being appointed Assistant Judge of the Court of Common Pleas in 1796, and represented the district in the assembly in 1806, 1807, and 1808, besides being Supervisor of the town twelve terms, viz: - 1802, 1803, 1804, 1805, 1806, 1807, 1808, 1809, 1810, 1811, and in 1814, 1820, 1830, 1831. He was also Justice of the Peace for many years, all of which official duties he performed creditably to himself as a self-made man, under adverse circumstances, and acceptability to his constituents. As we have before mentioned, the German Dutch invariably had in each of their settlements, one to whom they would look up as the business man. He was to take their cares of business upon himself, and whatever he considered best to be done, was done, and Shafer, possessing in a degree, the characterstics required - honesty and ability, was the chosen leader. There were many living within the town during his day, superior in ability, but they were of different blood, and had not the confidence of the German element. The Judge was followed in the people's confidence, by General Thomas Lawyer, and it is doubtful if the town will ever claim two men again, that were more highly esteemed by the people of the County, than the Judge and General Lawyer." Mr. Shafer had two sons and two daughters, George, Peter, Mrs. Samuel Ward, (Elizabeth-HWW) and Mrs. John Brown, (Anna-HWW). He died on the 15th of April 1839, at the ripe old age of eighty-two years. Mrs. Shafer (Elizabeth Werner/ Warner, d/o Johan George Jurgen Werner and Anna Dorothea Mattheus - HWW) was a daughter of George Warner, Sr., and performed many hazardous acts during the struggle. (Revolutionary War) Previous to the erection of Fort DeBoise, she collected such eatables and other comforts as the citizens of Cobleskill could donate for the garrison at Schoharie, and carried them on horse-back alone, without guide or guard. While on the way at a certain time, with a plentiful supply, she came across a squad of Indians, who were roasting a pig near the present residence of Matthew Bice. Assuming friendship and courage, she drew her horse up to the party, and asked one of them to cut a whip, as her horse was lazy. He complied with her order, and she passed on her "way rejoicing." Three different times she ran from the Fort to extinguish the flames the Indian torch had lighted against the side of her log home." (Mrs. David Shank)

MILITARY: MILITARY RECORDS OF SCHOHARIE COUNTY VETERANS, WAR OF REVOLUTION, George H. Warner, 1891; "Fifteenth Rgiment, New York Levies and Militia": "Henry Shafer, Sergeant, was wounded by gunshot in the thigh while on retreat from the battle of Cobleskill and became disabled from further military duty. He avoided capture and was found by friends and taken to the Lower Fort, where he recovered. At a time previous to the battle of Cobleskill and while scouting he was pursued and fired at by an Indian. After escape he found the spent musket ball of the Indian between the back and lining of his vest. In after years he became judge of the county. Died April 15, 1839, aged 82." Grandchildren (Father is Peter H.), William, Henry, Diana, Catharine, Peter P., now dead, served in the Union Army. Great grandchildren (Father is Peter P.), Clarence, Paul, served in the Union Army, and Mrs. Alexander Campbell, (Eve Ann Schaeffer).

Markly, brother to claimt.., "says he himself a soldier in Sr. Johnson's Regt. & is entitled to a share of the property claimed, but he is satisfied that his brother Jacob shall receive the whole". Says his father's farm was sold on account of their loyalty and the Stock taken and sold. Their Mother will be well satisfied that her son, Jacob, do receive the whole. (p. 395-396).REVOLUTIONARY WAR: "The outbreak of the Revolutionary War tore asunder many of the Tryon County (later Schoharie County, NY) families. The sympathies of some of the family of Christoper Merckel, father of Jacob Merckel, were with the British during this war. "This brought them into disfavor with the revolutionists who seized their lands and belongings. As United Empire Loyalists they were conveyed, by the British, by boat to Canadian soil. Each was given a narrow strip of land of virgin forest along the St. Lawrence River in what is now Dundas County, Ontario. Others were settled elsewhere. They were given a small supply of food. The heads of families each drew a number, corresponding to a tract of land, from a hat, and when the boat reached that tract the family disembarked and began to establish a home in the forest." No proof has been found that "Leany Markel Loft" and Lena Merckel, daughter of "our" Jacob are the same person. "Our" Lena's marriage to David Loft is "probable". David Loft was a "Mohawk Indian".

NOTE: I have a communication from : Jaunetta Helbing, 907 W. 450 S., Payson, UT. 84651-2603. She says: "Their son (son of Adam and Maria Hilts) John and daughter Maria, wife of Jacob Merkle went with the Loyalists to Upper Canada."

BIOGRAPHICAL: From: MERCKEL-MERKLEY IN NEW YORK AND CANADA, A.F. Bennett. "His will dated 19 May 1821 was proved on the 12th day of April 1828. In it he said ".....advanced in years". It mentions his wife, Catherine, sons, Peter, Adam his eldest son, and Henry, and daughters are not named. The executors were Henry Merkley, George Merkley, and alexander Rose. "Reids, LOYALIST IN CANADA, (Hunterdon, Lambertville, New Jersey, 1973), gives the following children to Johannes and Catharine Merckel Schaffer; Margaret, Nicholas (of Matilda), John (of Matilda), James (of Matilda, Mary, George (of Matilda). Donald A. Scott of Flint, Michigan, a descendant of Johannes Schaffer, has the following children for this couple; Adam, Barbara, Michael, John, Henry, Henry, Magdalena, Peter and Jacob. If there was a son, Jacob, he would have died before the will dated 1821 since he is not mentioned in it. There were two or more Johannes/John Schaffer/Shavers in Dundas County, Ontario, and the children have become mixed. "The following list of children is based on information taken from the Williamsburg Lutheran records, the will of Johannes Schaffer, A.F. Bennett's, "MERCKEL-MERKLEY IN NEW YORK AND CANADA, Reid's, LOYALIST IN CANADA, correspondence with John A. Scott of Flint, Michigan, and notes collected by the authors from cemetery and land records in Canada. Further research into this family will probably delete some names and add others to this list of children. "Johannes Schafer/Shaver's land petitiion can be found as #1073, Claim of John Shaver, late of Tryon Co." (Report of Bureau of Archives, 1904, p. 1099). In it he states....."Is a nat. of Amer....lived at Turloch, Tryon Co.,..... joined in '77, served at the War.....Had 200 acres at Turloch.....bought 3 years before the war from Henry Hanes....cleared 7 acres, built an house".... He also states his losses include his house, 2 horses, 2 cows, 1 heifer, 1 sheep, clothes, furniture, utensils and that all was left behind and has been sold by the Rebels. In the margin of his claim is written, "a good man". Jacob Markley, (this would be his brother-in-law, was witness for him.) "The Surname Schaeffer became Shaver in the Canadian records."

DEATH: An entry in the records of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of St. Peter's, Williamsburg, Dundas Co., Ontario, Canada: "JOHN SCHAEFFER. He had been lost in the woods and after 7 years his bones were found and these were buried."

NOTE: This John Shaver is probably John Shaver, Sr., whose last will was made in 1821 and probated years later in 1828. Did he follow the old Indian custom and went to a quiet place in the woods to die, when he felt that the end was near (he made his testament and then disappeared), or was this a coincidence?

MARRIAGE: "Dewald Schoffer and Elisabeth Buchhal". What was her surname? Buchhal? Buchnal? Bicknell? Bignell? (KINSHP lists all four.) I tried to find her baptism in the Lutheran and Reformed churchbooks, Schoharie, but to no avail. I don't know where I got the idea that her surname was Rickert and that she was "of Buchhal" like this was a village in Germany?

DEED: Deed to Barney Shafer dated 21 December 1847. She lived in Town of Grove, Allegany Co., NY USA, when she deeded the farm owned by she and Tewalt to Barney Shafer, her son, Liber 14, page 150. Farm located in the Town of Cobleskill, Schoharie Co., NY USA. Consideration: $200.00. Farm size, 151 acres.

NOTE: 15 November 1993. I think that Barney Shafer first owned a property on the Warnerville Hill Road, T-Richmondville, a saw mill or grist mill. There is still evidence of a dam along side the creek. I think that the farm that she sold Barney is farther up the hill. It is still a dairy farm and now owned by a family named Phelan.

MILITARY: MILITARY RECORDS OF SCHOHARIE COUNTY VETERANS, WAR OF REVOLUTION, George H. Warner, 1891; "Fifteenth Regiment, New York Levies and Militia": Marcus Shafer -- served under Captain Miller.

CHILDREN: 4/1995 - There has been some discussion between Martha Foland (MF) and Herman Witthoft (HWW) as to whether or not the following children belong to this Marcus (RIN 2733) and Anna Kniskern (RIN 9263), family MRIN # 3217, or to Marcus (RIN 2851) and Christina Berg (RIN 2913), MRIN # 1022. I think they belong to the first family, Marcus, MRIN 3217: 1. Catharine Schaeffer - RIN 3034, b. 8 Feb 1792. 2. David W. Schaeffer - RIN 3035, b. 11 May 1797. 3. Christina Schaeffer - RIN 3036, b. 7 Sep 1800. Martha states her reasons: "I think church record is in error and wife should be "Anna". See Will.
