COOK-(Koch)

Because of the relationship of the Cooks to the Lashers and Vosburghs, who were among the ancestors of Clifford M. Young, a brief chapter on the large Cook family follows:

The records of the Stone Arabia churches and local histories indicate that Casper Koch was born at Over-steinmur, Switzerland, August 4, 1700, and was married there October 27, 1722. The name of his wife does not appear but they arrived in America about 1725 and lived in the town of Palatine, Montgomery county. He died January 14, 1789, aged 89 years and 7 months. He left seven children, 57 grandchildren and 56 great-grandchildren.

Among his children were sons Casper and John. Casper (2) married Ann Eva Rickert. He died in Oswego County and his wife in Palatine. Their children were:

Barney of Jefferson county,

Mrs. Andrew Getman of Palatine,

George of Illinois,

Benjamin of Prattsburg, Steuben county,

Harrison of Palatine,

Mrs. Washington Saddler of Fulton county.

John Cook, born in 1740, married Magdalena Dillenback and lived at the original Cook homestead, about a mile south of Stone Arabia.

He was a Revolutionary soldier, serving as a minute man in Capt.Andrew Dillenback's Company of Militia, and was wounded in the Battle of Oriskany. When he returned home practically all the buildings in the community had been destroyed by the enemy at the time of the Battle of Stone Arabia. John died in 1804.

< Casper I. Cook.

Their son, Casper I. Cook, was born November 15, 1791 and died April 8, 1857. He married Clarissa Vosburgh, born December 30, 1801, in Columbia county and she died August 30, 1894. She was a sister of Phoeba Vosburgh Lasher, wife of Sebastian Lasher, whose family history is a part of this rercord. Casper I. Cook and Clarissa are buried in the Fort Plain cemetery, the remains having been transferred there from the Stone Arabia farm burial plot.

The children of Casper I. Cook and wife Clarissa Vosburgh Cook were:

Maria, wife of Peter G. Fox.

Christina, wife of Andrew Nellis.

Nancy, wife of John Doxtater.

Elisabeth, born February 1, 1827, wife of Dr. Simeon Crouse.

Phoeba, single.

Jacob C., born January 3, 1822, died July 17, 1912.

Henry C.

Jacob C. Cook married Nancy Maria Lasher, oldest daughter of Samuel Lasher and Harriet Vosburgh Lasher (See Lasher chapter). Jacob and Nancy and their family occupied the "Old Homestead" farm in Stone Arabia for many years. Their children were:

Phoeba, born May 19, 1852, died August 1, 1924, married Michael Shaver of Avoca October 14, 1875, born August 1, 1848, died November 1, 1923.

Eli H , born May 15, 1853, died May 2, 1927, married Ada Campbell born August 13, 1859, died March 27, 1936. Ada was a daughter of Daniel and Mary Nihoff Campbell.

Casper, born December 19, 1855, unmarried, lives with his sister, Clara Tilton, (Mrs. George) at Palatine Bridge (1945). Their home is the late Webster Wagner mansion.

Mary, born October 10, 1857. married Eleazer W. Scripture of Hornellsville February 22, 1888. She died in 1889. They had one child, died in infancy.

Orvetta, born July 18, 1860, married Peter Cokman (Coolman) February 7, 1888. He was born December 7, 1858 and died May 25, 1931. Orvetta lives at Palatine Bridge (1945). Peter Coleman was the son of William, who maried first Betsy Wick and, second, Mary A. Vechte.

Clara, born January 28, 1862, married George H. Tilton who died May 4, 1934, aged 84. Clara lives at Palatine Bridge (1945).

Aggie, born May 6, 1866, married Elmer Klock of Fords Bush April 27, 1904 and died April 16, 1908. He was born in 1862 and died in 1920.

Hattie, born June 20, 1868 (unmarried) died May 3, 1906.

The descendants of Phoeba, Eli H., and Orvetta follow. The others were either unmarried or left no children.

The children of Michael Shaver and Phoeba Cook Shaver of Avoca were:

Myrtie Shaver, born March 25, 1881, died February 11, 1926. She married Ray Putnam November 13, 1904. Their children were:

1. Ross Putnam, born August 22, 1908, married Marion Cable November 21, 1933. Ross and Marion had two children.

Ross Leo Putnam, born July 28, 1935.

Rodney William Putnam, born November 15, 1937.

2. Luella Putnam, born June 27, 1915, married Lefford Sidam January 15, 1934. Luella and Lefford had three sons:

Ronald William Sidam, born November 9, 1934.

Delos Karl Sidam born March 29, 1940.

Lynn Lefford Sidam, born February 14, 1942.

3. Twyla Putnam, born July 19, 1917, married Leiand Manville February 27, 1937 - 1 child born Jan. 27, 1938 died in infancy. Hattie Shaver, born December 22, 1883, married Murray Polmateer December 19, 1906. Their children were:

1. Ethel Polmateer, born September 25, 1911, married Kenneth Corbett September 28, 1932. Children of Ethel and Kenneth:

Arlowene Ann Corbett, born December 8, 1935.

James Kenneth Corbett, born September 8, 1938.

2. Winifred Polmaleer, born July 6, 1916, married Rodney Fox November 22. 1941. Theyhave a son, William Murray Fox, born October 8, 1942. Rodney died June 26, 1943.

The descendants of Eli H. Cook and Ada Campbell Cook are:

Florence Helen Cook, born September 2, 1881 at Canajoharie (unmarried).

Jay C. Cook, born September 9, 1890 at Canajoharie, married (1st) Harriet Shawper, and (2nd) Rose Van Auken of Fort Plain, born Oct. 6, 1899, daughter of John W. Van Auken and Anna Lillian Hoffman. John Van Auken was born Nov. 9, 1873 and died January 23, 1918. His wife was born February 9, 1874, living in 1945.

Harry M. Cook, born Sept. 11, 1892, married Alice Von Ftexenhart.

The descendants of Peter Coleman and Orvetta Cook Coleman are:

Marion B. Coleman, born July 12, 1892. Unmarried and employed at Laboratory of State Department of Health, Albany.

Lucile C. Coleman, born June 8, 1897, married Raymond J. Shults Nov. 11, 1915. They live at Palatine Bridge and have two children:

Raymond F. Shults, born July 22, 1916.

Doris Lucile, born Jan. 19, 1919.

Raymond married Marion Carnright July 25, 1942. Doris married William J. Crangle, Nov. 23, 1939 and they have the following children :

Mary Ellen, born January 19, 1941.

Cathryn, born January 16, 1943.
