"Peter M. Shafer was born on the old homestead farm in Warnerville July 20, 1819. He passed away June 3, 1907 from the infirmities of old age. He was married three times. First to Lydia Van Dresser, daughter of John and Anna Ferguson Van Dresser. She was born in the town of Cobleskill in 1820 and died in Warnerville Sept. 22, 1847. The children by this marriage were Theresa, Irving, John, Westly D. and Stillman G."

HISTORY: During the Civil War this town (Warnerville) was quite a pretentious village and had many wealthy residents. Great droves of cattle were collected here and driven on foot to the cities. One of the leading drovers and cattle dealers at the time was Peter M. Shafer (father of the late Lynd Shafer). He was also welfare officer. He was born July 20, 1819. About that time there were 44 houses here. According to Hamilton Child's compilation in the county's Gazetteer of 1872-73, Warnerville contained 2 churches, 3 stores, 2 hotels, a wagon shop, 2 blacksmith shops, a tannery 2 shoemakers, a grist mill, a seminary and several other shops and about 450 inhabitants. Warnerville might have been much larger than Cobleskill, had its prosperity not been impaired when the railroad was put through eight years previously.

DEATH: Town of Mt. Pleasant, Whiteside Co., IL USA. (His cause of death is unknown. Henry Lyker thinks he was probably killed in a horse accident. Herman Witthoft had the obituaries for that time period searched in the records of the Secretary of State, State of Illinois, but there was no obituary according to their search.)

BURIAL: Heaton Cemetery, Section 4, Ward Road, Town of Mt. Pleasant, Whiteside Co., IL USA. There is also a headstone erected by his granddaughter, Florence Zula (Shafer) Witthoft in the Slate Hill Cemetery, Sharon, Schoharie Co., NY, because his burial place and his son's, Manillious, was unknown until we received information on 8 December 1992 from Marilyn Anderson: 610 Locust St., Apartment B, Sterling, IL 61081, Tel: 815-625-2461.

TOMBSTONE: "Daniel D. Shaver died Feb. 13, 1860 Aged 38 ys. 3 ms. and 8 ds."

DOCUMENTATION: GREAT NEWS! LOCATION OF DANIEL'S BURIAL SITE DISCOVERED! Letter from Marilyn Anderson, quoted in part: On the mortality schedule for 1860 Daniel D. Shaver is listed as 43 years, married, from New York, a farmer who passed away in February. Daniel and Manillious are buried with another conflict on Manillious as the cemetery record says he was six years old. They are buried in Heaton Cemetery which I have mapped for you. It is on Ward Road where the X is approximately. The Heaton Cemetery is a very small cemetery on land originally owned by the Heaton Family, one of the first to come to Whiteside County. It is fenced in and very well kept. The first death in Mt. Pleasant was that of James Heaton in 1836. I wonder if this family has a connection with your family as it seems to be such a small private cemetery. I will try to find more on the Heatons. It lists Daniel and Manillious in Section 4 of the Cemetery as follows: Daniel D. Shaver died February 13, 1860 at 38 years and Manillious, son of Daniel D. and S. Shaver who died 9 March 1857 at age 6 years. (Herman and his sister, Florence, along with their spouses later visited the cemetery and it says of his age: " 7 ms. & 5 ds." HWW). NOTE: Daniel's wife, Sophia Kilts Shafer is not listed in the 1860 USA Census so she must have moved prior to the taking of the 1860 Census, 17-20 July 1860, Town of Mt. Pleasant, Whiteside Co., IL USA. Henry Lyker says that someone from NY went out to get her with a horse and cutter, but she wouldn't make the trip back to New York in the middle of the winter because she was pregnant with Daniel D. Shafer, born 2 May 1860. She must have left there between 2 May 1860 and 16 July 1860, the day before the census was started. She didn't return directly to New York, but went to Chicago and stayed with a relative for a time. (See below copy of a letter from Mrs. Elizabeth K. Tarpening.) She did return by railroad train to Sharon, NY, and lived with her Kilts relatives on the Sharon Hill to Argusville Road.

If I was to meet you on the street I would not know you and you would not know me. At the same time I claim you as a my Dear cousin and Hallena (Elena), (The word 'and' is erased.) "Loretta, Wellington, and Daniel the same. What I want to say, I take the Cobleskill Times and I saw the account of cousin Johnies Kilts' death. It broke me all up. Next I got a letter from Lulu - Mrs. Benedict - telling me you were there looking for my address. It is 4628 Lake Park Ave. We moved the first of Oct. in an apartment. How well I remember my Dear Auntie Sophia and how I loved her - your Dear Mother. Now I shed TEARS when she came East with her little family. She was at our house quite a little bit. I was a very little girl. Now I have passed my eightyth birthday. Am in my eighty-first year. Wellington, if I understand, Johnie had a Bible with the family record of two or three generations. I would like to have a copy of it. Johnies' father had it - my uncle Conrad Kilts. I have got part of it. There is a distant relative here in Chicago. His father was a nephew of Joshua Kilts. His name is Stanton Kilts. Ed Kilts, Daniel Kiltls' son, can tell you who I mean. He asked my daughter Rena if he didn't come in as one of the heirs. You must excuse all mistakes. My mother, Florence Z. (Shafer) Witthoft was very disturbed about this inaccuacy appearing in the Kilts book as she had given much time and energy providing David Kendall Martin with Kilts data. NOTE: (HWW) In a family letter written by my mother, Florence (Shafer) Witthoft to her children, dated Wednesday, 21 January 1970: (She was talking about the Kilts farms located on the Sharon Hill to Argusville Road.) That stretch of road from "John's farm", (the property that I, Herman Witthoft, remember as the "John Kilts farm"), to the next sharp turn should have been called Kilts Road. All four of Adam Kilts' sons settled there as did three or four grandsons. The "John" in the term "John's farm" was John Kilts, your Grandpa Shafer's cousin, who left the farm to Grandpa when John died. There is a tradition that John's father cheated my great-grandmother Shafer out of what should have been hers when my grandfather died in Illinois. (This is the first time that I remember hearing about this "tradition". I wish that I knew more about it, but all the principals are deceased now. Herman Witthoft, 25 February 1999)

DEATH OF HUSBAND # 1, GARRET VAN ZANT: Mary (Shafer) Lyker relates that she was told by her father, Wellington Shafer, that Garret disappeared, probably falling down a rock hole. This is the area near Howes Caves and there are holes in the ground with openings large enough for a man to fall through. It was an uncommon occurrence since the natives were aware of the location of the openings and were careful where they walked. BUT, apparently, he wasn't.

Shafer died at his home on West Main Street Tuesday after a painful illness of cancer of the stomach, aged 74 years. The funeral services were solemnized this day at his late residence, Dr. Griffin officiating. A wife and two children, George A. Shafer of Warnersville and Mrs. A.W. Harder of Amsterdam survive him. Madison Shafer is a brother and Mrs. William N. France and Mrs. Abram Mann also of this village are sisters of the deceased. Mr. Shafer was a son of Adam A. Shafer who resided on the Madison Shafer place in Cobleskill. Deceased was a farmer by occupation residing for several years in the Dunkel neighborhood, Town of Seward. About 30 years ago he disposed of his farm, and moving to this village has since lived in retirement, enjoying a well earned competency. Mr. Shafer was a man of rigid integrity. His ready and original wit, his steadfastness of friends and his judgement were characteristics. A wide circle of friends will regret to learn of his departure."

CONFUSION: I had Madison's death date as 12 February 1844, but did not document the source. Then I came across the following: "Record of the Shafer family prepared by Don C. Shafer for Captain Christian Brown Chapter(D.A.R.), Cobleskill, NY. "From the fact that I have in my possession a deed to property in Warnerville given by George Mann and his wife which came down with some of the papers and deeds of Dewalt Shafer dated in 1792, Iam led to believe that Adam (A.) Shafer (RIN 2243) was a brother of Dewalt (RIN 2218, Joseph (RIN 2240) andDavid (Dewalt and David are the same name), and a son of John (RIN 2235). Apparently Adam Shafer (RIN 2220)had a son Adam Jr. (RIN 2243), who was the father of Adam A. Shafer (RIN 2788) who died Feb. 15, 1869 at theage of 79. His wife's name was Lany (RIN 3372)." (From this I figured out that the following Adam, "parents", thatthey are talking about is Adam A. (RIN 2788)). "They were the parents of Mat. Shafer, father of D. Roy Shafer,Hiram Shafer, Aurelia Shafer Underhill, as well as other children. Perhaps some trace of this line could beobtained through Mrs. John Clute, Ephriam Shafer." (Both died about 1940.)

Empie from this same periodical: Peter Empie, Jr., son of Peter, Sr., was born and brought up on the old farm in Sharon, Schoharie Co., NY, and received his education in the pioneer schools of his day and generation. Following in the footsteps of his ancestors, he chose farming as his life occupation, and on reaching manhood purchased land near the parental estate, and was successfully engaged in his independent calling until his decease, at the venerable age of 83 years. He was a Democrat in politics, greatly interested in public affairs, and served his fellow townsmen as Assessor for a number of years. Both he and his wife were members of the Reformed Church. BIOGRAPHICAL: (From Barbara Empie Greene): The farm that Gideon and Susan owned had been passed downthrough the family by several deed transactions. It moved from "John Empea", of the Town of Sharon, SchoharieCounty to "John Empie Junior" of foresaid Town and County on June 24, 1807. (One hundred acres). On Feb. 20,1815, another 30 acres was deeded to "John Empie Junior" by "Joh. Empie of Town of Sharon, County of Schoharie and State of New York, Farmer". These transactions are identified as being between Johannes Empie, who married Anna Maria Kilts, and his son, John Empie of Sharon, who married Sophia Shaver. On May 23 1856, the same land was deeded to Gideon Empie, son of John Empie of Sharon, who in turn deeded it to his son, Myron Orlo Empie on March 16, 1905. The 1855 NYS Census shows that Gideon, Susan and their children were living at that time with John of Sharon and wife Sophia Shaver on that land, Lot #349. It is probably safe to assume that after the change of ownership in 1856, when John was 79 years old, John and Sophia continued to live with their son and daughter-in-law until they died. Gideon and Susan were 39 and 32 respectively at the time of the transfer. (Children: Sophia, age 12, Myron O., age 11, Luther, age 7, Martha, age 3, John Jay, age 1.)

MARRIAGE: Sally (Sarah) Kling was married to Rev. Marcus W. Empie, pastor of the Lutheran Church of Sharon, Walworth County, Wisconsin, which they served in about 1854, returning to New York in about 1870.

He was also Pastor at St. Thomas Lutheran Church, (Lutheran Church of Claverack), Churchtown, Columbia Co., NY, 1883-1896. And he was Pastor at Ev. Lutheran Church, West Sand Lake,Rensselaer Co., NY, as he performed the marriage ceremony, 8 June 1871, of Rev. Chauncey Diefendorf and Melissa Wetherwax. DEATH: From NOTICES OF DEATHS OF SCHOHARIE COUNTY PEOPLE, Joseph R. Brown, Jr., MemberSchoharie County Historical Society, 1945: "Schaeffer, Emory - Last week, at the Hospital, Philadelphia, Emory Schaeffer, aged 30 years. He belonged to the Ellsworth Regiment. His friends only a few days before his death received a letter from him lamenting his inability to be present with his Regiment in the post of honor occupied b yit now at Yorktown. He leaves a wife and two small children. He was a brother of Dr. F.W. Schaeffer, of Fulton. --S.R. April 24, 1862." (SCHOHARIE REPUBLICAN, newspaper) Another account says that he contracted typhoid in 1862 and died from it. Question: Did the widow apply for a pension? If so, the pension papers should tell us more about his children, etc.
