Recently, someone voiced severe disapproval that we were going to allow the topic of slavery on the site.

Our role as an historic site should not ignore or change history, but simply to present it. Distasteful subjects should never be hushed, because it is through knowledge of the past, we can learn and ensure it will never happen again. It is not the role of this site to present a history of slavery in America. Rather, do a search on the web to see what happened in New York in regards to slavery.

There are many misconceptions about slavery. Did you know:

1787 Slavery was extended for 20 years in New York, but continued until 1827.

Whites were kidnapped and enslaved.

On the slave market, blacks were more valuable.

George Washington and Thomas Jefferson owned slaves.

Did you know that at first, over 1/2 of the new arrivals in America were white slaves?

Whites were sold as slaves on the auction block and separated from their families?

At one point over half the Virginia House of Burgess were once Indentured Servants? (Indentured Servants were sold for a period of 4-7 years, some never saw freedom.)
