Dear Wayne:
Your letter came as a surprise although we were aware of a Vader living in or
near Arnolds Park, Iowa. A couple of summers ago some of our family occupied a
summer cottage for two weeks and upon registering, the manager told us there was a
Vader living in those parts. Sorry we didn’t bother to look you up at that time.
Your letter contained some interesting family news and I don’t believe we can
add anything to it that would help you compiling the Vader family tree. When we first
moved to Sioux Falls from Minneapolis in 1949 we were visited by Dr. Niedert and
his mother, whose maiden name had been Vader. After Cliff’s mother died in
Minneapolis, his father, Louis N. Vader, came to live with us and it was then that Mrs.
Neidert and Louis Vader compared notes and came up with the idea that there was a
relationship there but remotely. Louis N. Vader, born Dec. 19, 1869 in Manitowoc
County, Wisconsin, was the son of (mother) Jane Robinson of English descent and
(father) Leonard V. Vader of Holland descent, both of whom were born in Kingston,
Canada.
Our daughter, Caroline, who at one time worked in a music store here while
attending college, got acquainted with Dr. Niedert, who came in to buy records and
they kidded back and forth over their relationship. During some of those
conversations they jokingly talked about some colored folks by the same name of
Vader who lived in Minneapolis. Grandpa Vader (Louis) had mentioned them to
Caroline because at one time there had been a colored man by the name of Louis
Vader and also a colored girl by the name of Lillian Vader. We are inclined to believe
that one of the original Vader boys had gone south and possibly become a plantation
owner during slavery days and when the colored folks got their freedom many of
them took the name of their owners. This may account for the Vader name being
associated with some colored people. But other than that we know nothing more nor
does our daughter.
You mentioned that you had gotten in touch with Ione Vader and Lillian
Vader Bruckner in Minneapolis and yes, they are first cousins of my husband,
Clifford, as their fathers, Leonard and William, were brothers of Louis Vader (Cliff’s
father). We get to see Ione when we are in Minneapolis although it has been years
since we contacted Lillian and her sister Agnes. We get Christmas Cards too from
them as well as from Ray Vader in Portland, Oregon. He is the only surviving man of
the 8 brothers - four with the first wife of Leonard Vader, and four with the second wife
. Cliff’s father, Louis, was the youngest of the second four.
We met and talked to Ray Vader (64 years old) a year ago at Christmas time
in Los Angeles, California. He is the son of Frank Vader; also one of the 8 boys. So
that would make him a first cousin of Cliff. We had never met him before.
I was a Lutheran when I married Cliff and he has since become a confirmed
Lutheran. We have two sons, Robert Louis Vader and Frank Neal Vader and the one
daughter, Caroline Vader Nicholson. Robert has 3 daughters, Laura, Suzanne and
Marianne and 2 sons, Kirk Johnstone Vader and Michael Clifford Vader. They live in
Los Altos California. Frank has 3 daughters, Penny, Julie and Diane and 1 son,
Drake Vader. They live in Royal Oak, Michigan. Our daughter Caroline has one
daughter, Martha Lynn Nicholson and she lives in Omaha, Nebraska.

success with probing into the Vader tree. Maybe we will get to visit with you in
person sometime.
