Dear Mr Wayne Vader. Your welcome letter at hand and am late in my reply as I am not good in
health. I have lots of records for both my mothers and fathers side, ages, names, birth places, dates
of birth and death, marriages and names of wives. They are all passed away many years ago. Of
course there is lots of nephews, cousins, nieces and uncles scattered all over America.
I have 3 nieces and a nephew. I have four fine daughters and 3 grand daughters, 6
grandsons and 2 great grand daughters all living in Portland, Oregon.
I see you called on Ione and Lillian. She had a sister, Agnes and a brother. He died at about
22 years old. I was their uncle. Their father, Will Vader was my half brother. They lived on Polk St.,
N.E. Minneapolis. They were my father’s first family of 5 boys. Frank, the oldest, Will, Stanley, Lewis
and Willie, the youngest who died at birth. Father and his first wife and boy are buried in Evergreen
Cemetery in Manitowoc, Wisc. I have the deed and plot of a 6 grave lot.
My grand parents name was David Vader, with no record of his birth place. He was an old G.
A.R. (Grand Army of the Republic) veteran in the Civil War of 1860 - 1865. He died in June 1879,
wife Margie died Dec, 18, 1856.
Peter Vader born Feb. 6, 1849, was in the G.A.R. in the Civil War and brought home dead
and buried in the same cemetery as my father. Peter’s wife, Mary Vader, was born Feb. 26, 1834 and
left no record of death. Now there was a Calvin Vader, born July 18, 1842 and George Vader born
July 8, 1839. These are all the records I have of George and Calvin. Grandmaw and Grandpaw
David had 4 sons. Peter was the oldest, then Leonard, my father, Calvin and George. Leonard was
born in Simcoe Falls (Yarker), Camden Township, Upper Canada on Feb 16, 1847 and died April 27,
1884. He was 37, I was 2 years old, my brother was 1 year old when he died.
My mother’s maiden name was Jennie L. Carman, born in Miskcott, Wisc. Feb 16, 1852.
They were married on Dec. 24, 1873 in Manitowoc, Co., Wisc. Mother died Oct 25, 1905 at the age
of 53 in Minn. MN. She is buried in Lakewood Cemetery. She was a school teacher before she was
married. Father did logging in Wisc., he had a threshing outfit and he was a good provider. In 1901
mother had an auction and sold everything and rented the farm. Brother Leonard, my mother and me
went to Minn., MN, to join 2 older brothers, Bert C and Herbert V.
We rented a house and got a hired girl to take care of mother and do the cooking and house
work. We all worked. I baked for the Lew??ils biscuit Co and I was an interior and exterior painter
and decorator. I worked for the State University for years and followed it up until I was past 60 years
old. I never was back to the old house since I left. None of us boys ever got married till after mother
passed away. We sold the farm in 1808.
I got married Nov 7 1906 in Minn. My wife was French, born in Minnesota, a wonderful person.
She was 22, I was 26. I was born in 1880 and she was born in 1885, both born in August. I will be 81,
Aug. 8 and she will be 76 on the 15th of August, birthdays just a week apart. We will be married 54
years the 7th of next Nov, 1961. That is a wonderful record I think, don’t you? The Lord and Saviour
has always been with us, I pray. Bless His name.
In 1908 we went to the extreme north west of North Dakota, near the Montana line and took a
homestead - pretty wild country. Our 4 daughters were born there. We were there 12 years till 1920.
We came back to Mpls, bought a home there till 1926. We then sold out and came back to Portland,
Oregon. We have almost 1 1\2 acres centrally located in Portland, a 5 room house with all
improvements, clear of debt, a fine location. We may sell and buy just a lot and house. I have grand
kids take care of the lawn. They like to make spending money. All my daughters own their own
homes. My wife’s maiden name was Marie L Willette.
I never knew of a Herman Vader in Anoka MN. but I have heard of Martin Vader but know
nothing about him or that Vader WA. was named after him. I have heard that it was named after him.
I have also heard that it was named after my half brother Frank, my father’s oldest son. He lived in
WA. the biggest part of his life and died a few years back at 98 years old. I got a letter from him, he
has a daughter in Seattle, WA. and in California, and a son there and his name is Rubin Vader, and
Clifford Vader lives at 718 W 8th St., Apt 3, Sioux Falls SD. I am their uncle, they were my half
brother’s sons.
Now this Clarence Vader living at 7045 1st Ave., South Mpls. MN., Zone 23, and this Vernon
Vader and his sister living at 4430 35th Ave., So. Mpls., MN., Zone 6 and Loren and wife Isabelle
Vader live at 5609 14th Ave., S Mpls., MN., Zone 17 - all these kids are my oldest brother’s - Bert
Clarence Vader. I am their uncle.
Bert was born in Wisconsin on Oct 18, 1874, died in Mpls., Aug. 31, 1930. Vilas Herbert, 2
years older than me, was born in Wisc., Jan. 31, 1877, died Aug. 25th, 1937, buried in Portland,
Oregon. He has 3 daughters - Violet, Ruby and Gertrude and a son Archie Vader. All live in Portland,
OR. I am their uncle. I am Ione’s uncle. Leonard was born April 9, 1852 in Wisc., died July 17, 1958,
buried in Mpls., MN.
Now, I know of no Jeremiah Vader married to a colored race in Wisc. I never have knowing
of any Indian blood in any of the Vader families and don’t think there is now. I don’t know anything of
Isaiah or Jacob Vader.
I heard mother speak of Elizabeth and Martin Vader. I think they are my grand father David
Vader’s brother’s sons. Anyway, I think we are all related. Your brother’s name was George M Vader.
Where was he born, month, date and year? How old are you now? I wish we could have a good talk

He fell off a roof while building a porch on a house. He was found by a little boy, he was only three or
four blocks from his own home.

Leonard T. was born in Anabel, MO, where his dad and William Leath owned a
grocery store. His father, Joe, and mother, Rosa, lived in the back of the grocery store
. Less than a year later they moved to a log house on Arilly and Monroe Albright's
farm. Arilly was Joe's older sister and she and Monroe had 220 acres of John
Lafayette's farm. They had a nice house on the next hill. This was a temporary move
while Joe built a house on his land. Joe got 95 acres from his father's farm. John
Lafayette had a section (640 acres). When they divided up John Lafayette's farm,
Joe had to pay his brother and sisters money for buying their shares. William lived in
Kansas City and ran a grocery store. Nellie and Willie Graves homesteaded a farm at
Clarence Prairie. Ada Belle and Frank Harris went to Illinois. Joe sold 40 acres to
pay them. Jessie Shannon, Nellie's oldest son, got 80 acres and John and Anna's
house and barn. So Joseph and Rosa lived in Arilly and Monroe's log house while he
built a house on the remaining 55 acres.
Leonard had an older sister at the time named Juanita Catherine. After they moved
into the new house, Helen May was born. John Quentin and Dorothy Ann were born
in 1919 and 1921 while they lived on Wilbur Albright's farm. Then they moved back to
their house where Doris Alberta was born in 1922. While sawing lumber for a barn, a
tree fell on Joe and he was unable to work for a long time. In 1924 Joe moved his
family back to Wilbur's house and farmed it and his 55 acres. Ruby Rose and Joe
Junior were born there.
In 1927, when L.T. was 12, they moved again to a place one and a half miles from
Jacksonville . While Joe helped William Leath run a grocery store in Jacksonville, L.
T. farmed the Lucas place. L.T. started farming at 10. He cultivated every other row
in the beginning because he couldn't guide the horse well enough to do every row.
While farming the Lucas place, L.T. plowed and planted 14 acres in corn, beans, and
cane. The rest was pasture. He also hayed 18 acres for John Goddard.
In the summer of 1929 when L.T. was 14, he started working for Elmore Brown. The
first two summers he made $1/day, but the third summer was bad economically and
he only got 50 cents/day . He also had to help with the gardening and animals. In Oct.
1929 his mother wrote her brother that they had 3 cows, 3 horses, 1 mule, a sow with
7 shoats, and 50 or 60pullets. A lot of work to care for. She also canned over 100 qts
of tomatoes, and had "a nice lot of cabbage, beans, carrots, beets, and sweet corn."
Since L. T. was the oldest boy, he had the greatest responsibility for helping his
family.
L. T. went to Jacksonville for the first two years of High School. But the school only
went to 10th grade so L. T. had to transfer to Macon High School. The school district
paid for tuition but the students had to pay for their transportation. L. T. worked on a
farm each Saturday for 75 cents hauling manure and feed, etc. This way he earned
the $3/month that it cost to ride the school bus from Jacksonville to Macon. He
graduated from Macon High School in 1934 .
The summer of 1934 was bad for farming, so L.T. helped his dad dig wells to
supplement income. In the fall of 1935 L. T. started Moberly Junior College. In the
summer of 1936 he went to Kansas to work on the railroad.He drove spikes and also
worked for the cook. He saved $82 for school that summer. He loaned $40 to Helen
and Quent to buy a car. L. T.returned to Moberly Jr. College and worked in the rock
quarry summers for $2/day. In 1937 Leonard's family moved to Alt Street in Moberly
and his dad, Joe, bought a coal mine with another man. Leonard helped his dad dig
coal during Christmas vacation.
Leonard's dad died in Feburary 1939. He helped take care of his mother from then
until her death at the age of 97.
In 1942 he entered the army. In August 1942 L. T. was drafted into theArmy Corps of
Combat Engineers. He went to Fort Leonard Wood, MO for basic and trained in
building and destroying bridges, etc. They picked 42men to go to Ft. Belvair, VA for
officers training but Leonard 's blood pressure was too high so he was picked to go
to water purification school instead . Then he went to Camp Claybourne, LA to
recieve training in building and maintaining petroleum distribution pipelines. July
1943 he was sent to Oran, Algeria, Africa. Leonard was stationed on a waterpump
where he clorinated water and distributed it to army units and civilians. Then in
December he was shiped to Italy, but his ship was delayed by a big bombing raid
which had sunk 17 U S ships. So they tied up in Scicily for a week. Then they went
on to Bari Harbor. They were the fourth ship to get into the harbor. The screws were
turning up deadbodies including nurses as 2 hospital ships had been sunk. It was
critical that they land quickly because the airforce was filling their planes with 4
gallon cans from 55 gallon drums. They needed to set up pumps which could do in
30 minutes what had taken all night. Leonard was put on a construction crew building
pressure lines that hooked into pump stations. He also would test stations as they
came on line. His unit of 221 men built 318 miles of pipeline and had it operating by
June. After the pipeline was complete he was sent back to the main laboratory in
Mandura, Italy. There he would sample all the fuel storage tanks for quality.
Leonard's next move was to Taranto, Italy, then back to the mainbase laboratory at
Bari Harbor on the Adriatic. August 1944 the laboritory was taken out of the Corps of
Engineers and put with the Quarter Master Corps. They were getting ready to
transfer to Japan when the bomb was dropped and the war ended. Then in the fall of
1945 they got orders to move to Naples where they checked in their supplies then
came home.
When Leonard got home Lois told him that they either should get married or break it
off. So they were married 1 Dec. 1945. They went to Decatur, Illinois to get married
because Helen and Fay lived there and Leonard was also going to go to Chicago to
check on a job offer from Universal Oils. They got married on his return to Decatur.
They were married at the residence of the Presbyterian minister. Helen and Fay
stood up for them. Leonard and Lois stayed with Lois' family until Leonard took a job
with the Missouri State Highway Dept. He was interviewed for the job on Dec.18 and
started work Jan. 1, 1946. Then they moved to 1805 West Main in Jefferson City and
stayed there until Gloria was born. They also bought a 1949 Chevy shortly before
Gloria was born.
