82. John "John of Sharon"6 EMPIE, Jr. <See pg. 19> (Anna5, Johann4, Johann3, Johann2, Hanss1) was born 10 Feb 1775 in Palatine, Montgomery Co., NY, and was christened in NY, USA. He was the son of Johannes EMPIE and Anna Maria KILTS. John, Jr. died 26 Nov 1863 in Sharon, Schoharie Co., NY, USA, and was buried 29 Nov 1863 in Sharon, Schoharie Co., NY, USA.

NOTES for John, Jr.:

BIRTH: Edith Becker, p 3 says: "John of Sharon", b. 2-10 1775, d. 11-26-1863" Tombstone reads: "John Empie, Feb 10, 1775 - Nov. 26, 1863" "Mary Taily, his wife, died Apr. 9, 1807, aged 27 yrs." "Sophia Shafer, his wife, Mar 17, 1789 - Sep 17, 1865."

NOTE: Known as "John of Sharon" Empie.

DOCUMENTATION: Edith Becker's genealogy of the Empie Family published before 1962 places "John of Sharon" in the family of Johan Jacob Empey, who was the youngest son of Johannes Empie and Elizabeth Snell. E. Keith Fitzgerald in his 1984 genealogy and David Kendall Martin's, SNELL FAMILY, p. 53, have followed Mrs. Becker's lead, both also listing John as the oldest son of Johan Jacob and Barbara Bayer. (BEG)

(BEG) However, my family tradition has always been Kilts oriented, saying that he was the son of Johannes Empie and Anna Maria Kilts.

(Page 75)

We now have 3 pieces of evidence that prove that the latter placement is correct. Since no churchbook birth record could be found for John's birth in 1775 (possibly because of the upheaval in the area where he was born due to the Revolutionary War), other records were needed for proof of his parentage. With the help of David Kendall Martin, the original documentation that Edith Becker used was re-examined. It was at once evident that the entry had been mis-quoted. The reference, AMERICAN ANCESTRY, Vol. II:36, 1887 reads:

"Empie, Marcus William of Churchtown, b. 1824 (m. 1846 Sarah A. Kling); son of John of Sharon, NY, b. 1775, d. 1864 (m. Sophia Shaver); son of John of Palatine, b. 1744, d. 1824 (m. ______ Snell); of Huguenot descent."

This quote clearly puts John of Sharon in the family of John of Palatine, not in the family of his brother, Jacob. (Note that the author has confused the two Johannes Empies and has listed the wife of John of Palatine as "______ Snell," when she was in fact the wife of Johannes' father, Johannes Empie of Stone Arabia.) (BEG)

The deeds for the original Sharon Empie farm also provide evidence for this placement. The first deed covers the sale, for the sum of $200.00, of 100 acres of land designated as part of Lot 14 of the Lawyers' Patent. The indenture was contracted between "John Empea, of the Town of Sharon in the County of Schoharie and the State of New York, Farmer, party of the first part, and my son John Empea, Jr., of the above mentioned place aforesaid, Farmer, of the second part." This deed was dated, July 24, 1807. The second deed read the same, but covered the sale of Lot 13 and was dated February 20, 1815. The dates on these two deeds make it impossible for Johan Jacob to have been the John Empea who sold the farm to his son, for Johan Jacob was killed at the Battle of Oriskany in August of 1777, 30 years earlier! (BEG)

There is one other piece of evidence which helps establish John's parentage. It is contained in a story handed down through the Empie family and recorded by Grace Diefendorf Empie in her family record, WHO'S WHO TO ME.

"John Empie's father, with his little son, John, was near Schoharie Fort one day when he realized unfriendly Indians were following him. He stealthily hid little John under the potato vines in the field, then went right on through the field. The Indians caught him and scalped him without hitting him in the head first, as they usually did. As soon as possible, he crawled to the Fort and told them of his son. They at once went to the potato field, and found the little boy patiently lying under the vines waiting for his father's return as he had been told to do."

This story could not have happened if Jacob had been the father of the little boy, John, because John, born Feb 10, 1775, would have been about 2 1/2 years of age when Jacob died, Aug 7, 1777 at Oriskany. For a child that young to be that far from home the summer of 1777 (when potato vines were thick) was unlikely, and it would be even more unlikely that a 2 year old could lie hiding for a long period of time without crying or moving. It would, however, be possible for an older child to do so. (Barbara Empie Greene)

MARRIAGE: # 1 - Date of marriage, 6 Sep 1803, is listed in Cady Records, I-269.

# 2 - Recorded: Reformed Church, Lawyersville, T-Cobleskill, Schoharie Co., NY USA. "John Empie married to Sophia Shaver".

DOCUMENTATION: HISTORY OF SCHOHARIE CO., 1882, by Wm. E. Roscoe, p xii, reads: "Gideon Empie, whose father is John I. Empie." Gideon Empie was John of Sharon's son by his second wife, Sophia Shafer. It was John of Sharon's son by his first wife, Mary Taily, who was named John Isaac Empie, and was always referred to as "John I. Empie", whereas his father was known as "John Empie of Sharon". (BEG)

BIOGRAPHICAL: Accounts of John of Sharon and his son, John Isaac, are given by Rev. Marcus Kling, in the book, "A REUNION OF MINISTERS AND CHURCHES, HELD AT GARDNERVILLE, May 14-17, 1881," Pub. Philadelphia, Pa., Lutheran Publication Society, 1881. Under the section, p. 162, "Memories of our Departed", Rev. Kling writes: JOHN EMPIE

In some respects he was a remarkable man; and divine grace made him just what he was, a burning shining light in the world and a power in the church. As early as 1808, being then about thirty-three years of age, after a long and fearful struggle, he found Christ precious to his soul. At that period, as related by him, spiritual darkness hung over the churches, and

experimental piety was unthought of by the many and professed by very few. Hence in his troubled state of mind, he hardly knew the nature of his anxieties, whom to consult, or where to find relief. But the Lord by His spirit was surely leading him in the way he knew not of, and finally brought him into the light and liberty of the gospel of Christ. He was remarkable for his unwavering, undeviating perseverance in the course of piety from that time till the day of his death. With him religion was a living, controlling principle, to be carried out in all the activities and relations of life. That responsibility he accepted, and in a remarkable degree carried out, without turning to the right or the left. He was remarkable for the controlling and lasting influence he exerted over others; probably no other lay member in the church excelled him in this respect. He had this power with men because he had power with God, and lived pre-eminently a holy life.

Twenty years after his conversion, at the time brother Wieting became his pastor, he found him one of the few praying souls in the church. He labored and prayed until he saw multitudes around him converted and gathered into the church; and when he died, he not only saw his own children, but nearly all his children's children, members of the flock of Christ. Though he passed away from earth some eighteen years ago, to reap the rewards of heaven, his influence on earth remains, and will continue through future generations." (The church referred to here was the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Seward at Gardnersville, NY, Philip Wieting Pastor.) (Barbara Empie Greene)

CHILDREN: Children of John Empie of Sharon were born on the Empie farm, part of which is now Slate Hill Cemetery, Town of Sharon, Schoharie Co., NY. John's father, Johannes Empie, moved to Sharon from Stone Arabia in about 1800 where all of his children including John had been born. He sold the Sharon farm to son John on 24 July 1807, just before John's first wife, Mary Tally died. Thus, John was living there after 1807 and all of his children by his second wife, Sophia Shaver (Shafer) would have been born there.

BURIAL: Slate Hill Cemetery, T-Sharon, Schoharie Co., NY USA.

He married (1) Mary TAILY 6 Sep 1803. She was born 1780. Mary died 9 Apr 1807 in Sharon, Schoharie Co., NY, USA, and was buried Apr 1807 in Sharon, Schoharie Co., NY, USA.

NOTES for Mary:

BURIAL: Slate Hill Cemetery, T-Sharon, Schoharie Co., NY USA.

SURNAME: According to Barbara (Empie) Greene, her name is spelled as "Taily" on her tombstone. (Sometimes the surname is spelled "Daily" or "Tailey".)

Known children of John "John of Sharon" EMPIE, Jr. and Mary TAILY are:

+ 421. f i. Catherine "Katy" EMPIE, born 31 Dec 1800, died 31 May 1876 <See pg. 223>.
+ 422. m ii. Abraham (Abram) EMPIE, born 29 Aug 1804, died 30 Dec 1892 <See pg. 224>.
+ 423. m iii. John Isaac EMPIE, born 1807, died 5 Mar 1878 <See pg. 225>.
John, Jr. married (2) Sophia SHAFER 25 Oct 1808 in Cobleskill, Schoharie Co., NY, USA. She was born 17 Mar 1791 in Schoharie, Schoharie Co., NY, USA, and was christened 10 Apr 1791 in Schoharie, Schoharie Co., NY, USA. She was the daughter of Marcus SCHAEFFER and Annaje KNISKERN. Sophia died 17 Sep 1865 in Sharon, Schoharie Co., NY, USA, and was buried 20 Sep 1865 in Sharon, Schoharie Co., NY, USA.
NOTES for Sophia:
BIRTH: Gravestone of John Empie reads: "Sophia Shafer, his wife, Mar 17, 1789 - Sept 17, 1865."

(Page 77)

PARENTS: (Barbara Empie Greene) Uncertain. Was she the daughter of Marcus Schaeffer and Annaje Kniskern of Schoharie? They had a daughter, Sophia, baptized in 1791, who would be about the right age, but there are difficulties with this placement because of the dates involved. That baptism was recorded as follows:
BAPTISM: Recorded: St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Schoharie, Schoharie Co., NY USA. Sophia, b. 17 Mar 1791, bp. 10 Apr 1791. Parents: "Marcus Schaeffer, Anna" Sponsors: "Johannes Kniskern, Sofia Kniskern"
If this is the same Sophia and she was actually born in 1789, as per tombstone, then there is an unusually long time between her birth and baptism. On the other hand, perhaps the tombstone date is in error. We know that the gravestone was erected at least 45 years after Sophia's death, since it also lists the dates of death for her son, Gideon, and his wife. By then the correct date of her birth may have been forgotten. (BEG)
MARRIAGE: There is a marriage recorded at the Reformed Church of Lawyersville, T-Cobleskill, Schoharie Co., NY (formerly German Reformed Church in New Rhinebeck, T-Sharon, Schoharie Co., NY.): "John Empie married Sophia Shaver, 25 Oct 1808."
Is this a record for the marriage of the Sophia born 1789, or of Sophia, born 1791, or are both Sophias the same person? There are several indications that these two Sophias might be one and the same.
1. We can find no records of a birth for another Sophia in this time frame.
2. It is highly unlikely that 2 Sophias would marry 2 John Empies about the same time, especially since we can find no record of a second marriage, or a John Empie of the right age who was unmarried in 1808.
3. The second son in Sophia and John Empie of Sharon's family is named "Marcus." This was the first time this named appeared in the Empie family, but it is the name of the father of the Sophia born in 1791.
Until evidence is found to the contrary, we are placing Sophia as a daughter of Marcus Schaeffer. (HWW)
CHILDREN: Grace Empie's records list Gideon, Rev. Marcus, Mariah, Nancy and Sophia as children of John Empie and Sophia Shaver.
BURIAL: Slate Hill Cemetery, T-Sharon, Schoharie Co., NY USA. Spelling of surname on tombstone is "Shafer". (BEG)

Known children of John "John of Sharon" EMPIE, Jr. and Sophia SHAFER are:

+ 424. f iv. Maria (Mariah) EMPIE, born 20 Mar 1809, died 1892 <See pg. 227>.
425. f v. Anna Nancy EMPIE, born 13 Dec 1810 in Sharon, Schoharie Co., NY, USA, christened 16 Jan 1811. She married Henry FREDERICK in NY, USA. He was born 1810. Henry died 1899. Anna died 1889 in Sharon, Schoharie Co., NY, USA, and was buried 1889 in Sharon, Schoharie Co., NY, USA. Notes for Anna:
DOCUMENTATION: Family Records, compiled by Grace Diefendorf Empie, p. 5, also THE EMPIE FAMILY, compiled by Edith Van Heusen Becker: Edith Becker's THE EMPIE FAMILY, family of John of Sharon and wife, Sophia Shafer, shows 5 children including a child "Anna, born 12-13-1810, baptized 1-6-11", but no Nancy. Grace Empie's records show a Nancy Empie who married Grace Empie's records show a Nancy Empie who married Henry Frederick as one of the 5 children of John of Sharon, but no Anna. Since Nancy Empie's Slate Hill gravestone lists her as born 1810 and the wife of Henry Frederick, we know that Nancy existed.
We believe that Nancy and Anna are the same child, Nancy and Anna being possible variations of the same name (BEG).
MARRIAGE: Grace Empie's records say Nancy Empie married a Henry Frederick.

TOMBSTONE: Tombstone, Slate Hill, "Nancy Empie (1810-1889), wife of Henry Frederick".

83. Petrus E.6 EMPIE <See pg. 19> (Anna5, Johann4, Johann3, Johann2, Hanss1) was born 21 Feb 1779 in Palatine, Montgomery Co., NY, and was christened 1 Mar 1779 in Palatine, Montgomery Co., NY. He was the son of Johannes EMPIE and Anna Maria KILTS. Petrus died 28 Apr 1850 in Sharon, Schoharie Co., NY, USA, and was buried 30 Apr 1850 in Sharon, Schoharie Co., NY, USA.

NOTES for Petrus:

BAPTISM: Recorded: Trinity Lutheran Church, Stone Arabia, T-Palatine, Montgomery Co., NY. Parents: "Johann Empie Jr, Anna Maria". Sponsors: "Petrus Kiltz, Anna Empien".

MARRIAGE: We have a marriage date of 6 July 1806, but do not know the source of the information, so it is listed here for informational purposes and possible verification at a later date.

DEATH: In 1991 Barbara Empie Greene traveled to Sharon and visited the Slate Hill Cemetery, writing down from tombstones the names and dates of Empies buried there. Among those was Peter Empie, "d. April 28, 1850, 73 years." She noted that the DAR records for this cemetery either did not list some of the names on her list, or did not list the dates completely.

BURIAL: Slate Hill Cemetery, T-Sharon, Schoharie Co., NY USA. "Peter E., Died 1850, Ae 73 yrs." This does not jibe with his birth date. (Age should be 71 years and not 73 years.)

BIOGRAPHICAL: From an article in BIOGRAPHICAL REVIEW, p 193. Peter Empie, Sr., grandfather of John G. spent his 77 years of life on the old homestead in Sharon, Schoharie Co., NY, working as a farmer through boyhood, early manhood and old age. He cleared off wood, cultivated the soil, and in course of time erected substantial frame buildings in place of the original log house and barn. His wife, Katie Lehman, was born in Sharon. She was a daughter of John Lehman, whose father was one of the original settlers of that place. Of their eight children, none survive.

His farm was on part of the old Lawyer Patent in Schoharie Co. An old deed to 125 acres of land dated March 27, 1849, shows that Lot 13 of the Lawyer Patent was sold by Peter to his first cousin, John Jacob Empie, and wife, Sophia, for $2,000. (Thomas Planck, 9/14/1998)

He married Catherine Mary LEHMAN 6 Jul 1806 in NY, USA. She was born 17 Nov 1785 in Sharon, Schoharie Co., NY. She was the daughter of John LEHMAN and Catherine Krims LANDSMAN. Catherine died 20 Oct 1847 in Sharon, Schoharie Co., NY, USA, and was buried 23 Oct 1847 in Sharon, Schoharie Co., NY, USA.

NOTES for Catherine:

BIRTH: Date computed by genealogy program, PAF: "d. Oct 20, 1847, Ae 61y. 11m. 3d." This computes the d/o/b to be 17 Nov 1785.

BURIAL: Slate Hill Cemetery, Sharon, Schoharie Co., NY USA. "Catharine, his wife, D 1847, Ae 61 yrs." (This is information from the DAR records, but it is incomplete.)

TOMBSTONE: Barbara Greene, her son, Jeff, and John Empie visited the cemetery after attending the Kilts Reunion in 1991. Tombstone reads: "Catharine, wife of Peter Empie, d. Oct 20, 1847, Ae 61y. 11m. 3d."

NEWSPAPER: (BEG) THE COBLESKILL INDEX, Thursday, Jan 4, 1951 shows a picture of the Adam Empie farm. The caption under the farm reads:

The picture above was printed on the Lucky Farmer page in the Dec 21st issue of the Index. It was identified as the Empie farm located on the Engleville Road near Sharon Springs. A brief history of the farm follows:

The farm is located in the Town of Sharon, in Schoharie County and is owned and occupied by Berthold J. Empie (21133), his wife and his mother Mrs. Jacob Empie. The first owner was Adam Empie , great, great grandfather of Berthold Empie. The farm of 130 acres was purchased in 1833 and has been in the Empie name since that time. After the death of Adam Empie, the farm came to his son, Jacob Empie, the first. He in turn willed it to his nephew Leander Empie, at whose death it became the property of his son Jacob Empie, the second and father of the present owner. A blacksmith shop and six houses had been built on the farm before it belonged to the Empie's. The places where they stood can yet be seen. The present dwelling was erected in 1867 by Leander Empie.

Owners of this farm:

(Page 81)

NOTE: Edith Becker, THE EMPIE FAMILY, p 9 regarding Ephrata Census (does not give year of Census and one cannot really be sure because the ages for the people enumerated don't add up to a common year that a census might have been taken.):

"Conrad Empie, ae 56, born Fulton Co. and lived 56 years in the Town of Ephrata. Wife, Elisabeth, ae 58 and lived in Town of Ephratah 58 years.

Nancy, 23

Catharine, 21

Margaret A., 17

Mrs. Conrad died 16 February 1858, ae 62y 6m 3d, Ephratah Census".

NOTE: Records of Dutch Reformed Church at Ephratah, Fulton Co., NY, p. 13 lists for the year 1842:

"Family # 20 Conran(?) W. Empie

Elisabeth Empie

- Children: Nancy, Catharine, Margaret, Anson".

The question is, is this the same Conrad Empie and Elizabeth Empie? Edith Becker didn't seem to think they were, yet we have no other Conrad Empies of the Johan Ernst Emichen lineage born about this time on record. The ages Mrs. Becker gives for them in the 1850 census (if that's where this record came from - she doesn't identify it) would make them born 1794 (Conrad) and the 1796 (Elizabeth) whereas, "our" Conrad and Elizabeth were born 1791 and 1798, respectively. Also, the Slate Hill records say "our" Conrad was age 59 at death, and "our" Elizabeth almost 79; yet the Ephratah records say that that the Ephratah Elizabeth was age 62-6-3 at her death in 1858 (again making her b. 1796) and that she is buried in the Ephratah Cemetery, not Slate Hill.

With all these discrepancies in mind, we will list the children of this Ephratah Conrad Empie family: Nancy, Catherine, Margret, and Anson in our notes only, available for further study, and we list only the children known to be those of "our Conrad, b 1791," as his. This means that we are missing many of his children, since he married in 1824 and the first child listed is born in 1833, but that can't be helped until we locate more data on this family.

There is also another child, Charlota, born in Minden in 1821 to a Conrad Empie and wife Elizabeth. Since we have a marriage record of "our" Conrad showing he did not marry until 1824 we will postulate that this child was an older married daughter of the Ephratah family. (BEG)
